HANOI AND VICINITY, AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2008

Throughout the streets of Hanoi ... a constantly changing kalaidescope of colors and sounds.  On my first trip there were still few tourists, but by the time I went with Brenda in 2008, the city was fast becoming westernized ... though you would hardly suspect it from these snapshots.

Who in the world is that funny looking tourist??

Food is to be found everywhere, particularly on the streets.

With all the extreme tropical sun elsewhere on each of my Vietnam visits,  the sky remained obstinately overcast during both trips on the magnificently picturesque Halong Bay.   We did not rent a junk just for the two of us, but perhaps because of the poor weather, found ourselves alone with the crew.

Up the Yen Vi River en route for the Perfume Pagodas.  This was certainly the most adventurous outing I attempted in Vietnam, as it entailed several hours of fairly difficult driving and then an hour or so rowing (though admittedly I never actually manned the oars), finally some serious walking.  In the end the scenic rewards were well worth the efforts.
